The Little Veto of the Suspended Button
It settles, freed from the weave,
a mother-of-pearl disk, bare and flat.
No longer a border for cuff or hem,
nor barrier to cold, nor call.
It is just form, a small silence,
with smooth edges and nearly blind holes.
It seeks no hands, needle, thread, remote echoes
of a woven task, of resigned holding fast.
It has lost its stitched logic,
that obedience to the gray or blue fabric.
Now it breathes an unsensed air,
and from its core a declaration is born: “No.”
It is not the weight of detachment that oppresses it,
but the lightness of a pure choice,
that in this absence stamps its essence,
a minuscule, intact adventure.
And so it lies, a stone upon the sand,
a star fallen into a dark drawer.
Neither anxiety moves it, nor ancient rage
of no longer being part of a garment.
It spoke its “no” in an atom of air,
and remains still, in that completed act,
a manifesto, of solitary grace,
of an infinitesimal, proud point.
