The Edge of Waiting

On the immaculate cloth, a picture
that time arrests, ephemeral and perfect.
A brief sculpture of flavor, a thief
of glances before the sharp appetite
clouds the ritual. Every diner knows,
without a sign, the pause that will come.

And then the blade, mute, tears the veil,
the first cut, the whisper of metal
against porcelain, a small yearning
for destruction that announces the ransom
of sense. Beauty now dissolves,
but in another realm, eternal, it will last.
