Letters on Silence

In the silence, a grammar whispers rules of pause,
quotation marks of rain among footsteps and spray;
an invisible pen writes upon the soaked pavement,
lost letters that the wind can never soothe.
Each stroke is a word suspended still,
an ellipsis holding back an answer never given;
the grammar of silence composes sentences of water
that graze the edges of the night.
With the dawn’s bright light, the lines grow faint,
but remain like stars upon the damp cement;
traces of letters that walk alongside us,
in the gentle patience of a whispering morn.
