# Time of Silk

The memory of the stairs slides backward,
every step repeats a step that will not return,
an echo of a broken key seals the hallway.
Weaving time from threads of shattered silk,
the hours knot in voiceless pauses,
and the banister holds the breath of the days.
Each step is a page the wind refolds,
the words retreat like snow upon the steps,
the room holds the tenderness of a spent memory.
When the day folds over, the ascent renews,
a thread re-knots and begins to stream,
the memory of the stairs, woven of shattered silk, breathes.

## Explanation

This poem presents itself as a lyrical and deeply synesthetic meditation on time and the elusive nature of memory. It is not merely a recollection, but the materialization of a mnemonic process that operates with the delicacy and artifice of fine fabric. The central *leitmotif* – the stairs – transcends its architectural function to become a multifaceted metaphor for the existential journey: ascending implies aspiration or effort, descending suggests regression or reconsideration.

The opening immediately establishes a sense of inevitable loss and timelessness. The image of "the memory of the stairs slides backward" is powerful, as it subverts the ascending function of the step, transforming progress into retrogradation. The step that "will not return" seals this state of temporal suspension. The metaphor of the “echo of a broken key” not only suggests closing (the end of a cycle or denied access), but also introduces structural fragility, the failure to complete a circular movement.

The thematic core develops around weaving and material: time is treated as shattered silk. This lexical choice grants the flow of time a precious quality, extremely delicate yet intrinsically incomplete. The "hours knot in voiceless pauses" describe the experience of waiting or intense reflection, moments when time does not flow linearly, but accumulates and stalls. The banister, an element of physical support, assumes here the metaphorical function of held breath, suggesting that memory is an arduous act of emotional self-containment.

The central section intensifies this feeling of dissolution through almost tactile and visual images: "Each step is a page the wind refolds," evoking the idea that personal history is not written, but constantly manipulated by external or internal forces (the wind). The return of words like snow upon the steps adds an element of cold beauty, suggesting that memories are ephemeral and subject to natural decay. The "room" becomes the containing space for the past, where tenderness is not fully recoverable, but only kept in a spent state.

The poetic climax manifests in the passage toward the end, a moment of cyclical resolution. The day folding over and the ascent renewing signal a break from the initial melancholic immobility. The act of "re-knotting" suggests an active effort, almost a ritual, to reclaim the temporal flow. The poem does not resolve pain or loss; on the contrary, it accepts the process of continuous re-weaving. The ending is therefore a declaration about the resilience of memory:
