# A Smile of Water

On liquid mirror, silent and soft,
a sweet shadow, a ray appears light.
No hand trace, but a memory aloft,
a painted smile that the wave takes sight.
Every ripple, a stroke that is blended,
a gentle feeling, pure and without end.
Its glow upon the clear banks extended,
a silent echo the soul must defend.
Then the wave passes, and the veil disperses,
but in every drop an imprint remains.
The echo of that smile that never reverses,
in my heart, a sovereign emotion sustains.
It is no longer there, the form has been lost,
but in the silence an echo still whispers.
Thus joy, though vanished, whatever the cost,
in the heart dances and hope forever inspires.

## Explanation

The text is structured as a lyrical meditation on the ephemeral nature of beauty and emotion, using the image of reflection on water as a powerful central metaphor. The "water smile" is never a tangible object; it is rather a sensory and psychological experience that the poet captures in the very act of observing its dissolution. The aquatic element, from the first stanza ("Su specchio liquido, silente e piano"), functions as a symbolic *locus*: the mirror reflects not only a physical image but also receives and distorts human feelings.

The poetic structure is built on a dialectical movement between the visible and the invisible. The smile appears as a fleeting event ("un raggio appare lieve," "non mano traccia"), suggesting that the purest joy or memory cannot be grasped with materiality, but are transient perceptions. This transience is emphasized by the concept of ripples: every movement of the wave, while distorting the image, also confirms its momentary existence ("Ogni increspatura, un tratto che si fonde").

The thematic heart of the poem lies in the passage from the external scene (the water mirror) to the emotional interiority of the lyrical subject. The external event – the reflected smile – is only the stimulus for an internal resonance. When the wave passes and "il velo si disperde," the physical form disappears, but this does not mean nothing. The poet establishes a mechanism of emotional memory: although the image is lost ("Non è più lì, la forma si è smarrita"), its effect persists.

The finale represents a philosophical and consolatory resolution. Joy or hope do not reside in the lost object, but in its capacity to leave an immaterial imprint. The echo of the smile survives "nel cuore mio," transforming ephemerality into something permanent and sovereign. In this sense, the poem transcends simple landscape description to become a reflection on the architecture of memory: it is in the soul's ability to retain the echo – not the form itself – that nourishment is found ("la speranza irriga"). The poem thus celebrates the enduring power of feeling over physical oblivion.
